I want to thank Mitch for what he has started here. He has created a business that is now iconic to Saginaw. When I heard a small rumor that he was thinking about stepping out of the business and moving on to his next adventure I knew that I had to step in and keep this business going. What he has started here is amazing and I am so excited to keep it moving forward and expand on it with my own talents. For those that do not know me, my name is Maria Austin. I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where I also attended the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute. But I have been a chef here in the tri-cities for the last 13 years where I live with my husband and two children. I have been the Executive Pastry Chef for Shari at the Wilard Hilton in Auburn, the Executive Chef and Pastry Chef for the Golden Glow Ballroom, Chef for the Saginaw Country Club where my husband Jacob Austin is the Executive Chef, and most recently I opened my own business in 2020 called Mama Mia's Pastries where I have made tens of thousands of cookies, pastries, and cakes for all types of events including birthdays, weddings, and many others. I also volunteer my time at the Saginaw Career Complex which has an outstanding culinary program. I mentor students in the art of baking and also train them to compete in competitions where we have taken many awards not only in the state but on a national level. I am beyond excited to bring my talents and expertise to “The Bread Gal”! I will be keeping what Mitch has started alive and continue with the same exact recipes and breads, but also adding my own cakes, cookies, and pastries into the bakery. So please stop in and say hello! I hope to make everyone’s day just a little bit sweeter.
